Yamaha have launched the CL Series of digital mixing consoles.

LMC visited the Prolight + Sound Show in Frankfurt last month to take a look at the latest evolution in digital mixing consoles from Yamaha. Check out our gallery of photos from our visit to the show on our Facebook page.

The CL Series line-up comprises three consoles, the CL1, CL3 and CL5, ranging in capacity from 48 to 72 mono + eight stereo inputs. All feature 16 DCAs and 24 mix / eight matrix output busses. In addition, Yamaha have launched two new rack-mountable I/O units, the Rio3224-D and Rio1608-D, which can be used in a variety of combinations and configurations, communicating via a scalable Audinate Dante™ digital audio network.

LMC Audio visited Hammersmith Apollo for the launch of Martin Audio's new MLA Compact system.

MLA Compact brings the revolutionary cellular technology behind MLA to a wider range of touring and installed sound applications that do not require the full power and throw of the full-size MLA, or where a smaller, lighter system is called for.

Commenting on the system, Paul Hinkly, MD at LMC Audio, says, "If there's one new system you listen to this year, make it the MLA Compact."

MLA Compact is scalable and versatile and shares the sonic attributes of the flagship MLA. It's compact size (W: 788mm x H: 280mm x D: 500mm) belies its output capabilities - a 12-box array can easily deliver full rock SPL's in a 5,000 seat venue, whilst a 24-box array will approach the output of many 'full-size' systems which have less efficient acoustic elements.

MLA Compact's fully integrated system brings together the latest technologies in acoustic design, amplification, DSP and industry-leading optimisation software - with communications and control via an easy-to-use audio network. MLA Compact arrays can be remotely controlled from the supplied wireless tablet running VU-NET control software.
Class D amplification, U-NET control network and DSP circuitry are integrated within each enclosure, simplifying system set-up and operation and eliminating long, heavy-gauge cable runs - a particular benefit in premium fixed installations. Reducing cable runs to just inches within the enclosure means that all the power produced by the amplifier goes directly to the speakers and is not dissipated in the cables.

With MLA Compact, external amplifier racks are dispensed with - saving valuable space both on tour and in fixed installations. From the outset, MLA Compact has been designed with the financial and environmental aspects of running a system in mind; use of maximum-efficiency acoustic and amplifier technologies reduce both the size and weight of the system, assisting transportation as well as reducing the mains or generator power needed to run the system.

StageMix provides remote control of M7CL functions via a simple, intuitive graphical interface from anywhere within wireless range*.

The software has been specifically designed to allow engineers to adjust monitor mixes from the performers' positions on stage, directly controlling mix parameters via the iPad rather than having to rely on verbal directions to a second engineer. The result is better mixes in less time: a huge advantage during high-pressure pre-show setup. StageMix does not provide remote control of all M7CL parameters, but is focused on the requirements for adjusting monitor mixes on stage.

- The main page of the StageMix is called the "Mixer" window. It shows the EQ curve, CUE and ON buttons, fader and level meters, and channel names for eight adjacent channels.
- The colour of the Sends on faders button matches those used on the M7CL console. [CUE] and [ON] buttons appear below, allowing the currently active Mix or Matrix bus to be Cued and turned On/Off.
- One band of EQ can be adjusted at a time.

Yamaha have released firmware updates for the PM5D digital console and the DSP5D Digital Mixing System (PMD5-EX).
V2.25 firmware for PM5D and V1.25 for DSP5D is available from the Yamaha download site at

Updated PM5D and DSP5D Editors (V2.2.5; Win Vista/XP) for Studio Manager are also available.

LMC recommend that console owners update to the latest firmware version and check that they are running the latest versions of Studio Manager and the latest editor. All are available from the download site.

Tascam have released firmware updates for the SS-R1 and the SS-CDR1 solid state recorders.
LMC recommend that users upgrade to the latest firmware version. The upgrade can be easily installed by the user by copying the downloaded file to a compact flash card and then following the update procedure as described in the release notes available on the Tascam site along with the firmware file.
